Biopower Tongeren biogas plant will use corn to produce electricity

Enovos Luxembourg along with its project partners Pholpa and NPG energy announced the start of operations at .8MW biogas plant, Biopower Tongeren, located in the province of Limburg, Belgium.

Corn will be used as the main feedstock to produce biogas which will be converted into clean electricity using a motor and be fed to the local grid.

Heat generated by the plant will be used to dry the fermentation substrates and reuse them as fertilisers in the fields.

The biogas plant will use a pre-fermentation tank to increase the production of the gas.

Enovos Luxembourg Renewable Energies & Cogeneration head Daniel Christnach said, "In cooperation with the project partners, the plant’s capacity can optionally be subsequently expanded to 5.6 MW which would be enough to provide green power to all households of the City of Tongeren."

The plant will generate enough clean electricity to power about 6,500 households and reduce around 10,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emission every year.
