BP Wind Energy and renewable energy developer Sempra US Gas & Power have commenced commercial operations at the 470MW Flat Ridge 2 Wind Farm in Kansas, US.

The farm was constructed as a joint venture 50:50 between BP Wind and Sempra at an estimated cost of over $800m.

Located on a 66,000acre site across Harper, Barber, Kingman and Sumner counties, Flat Ridge 2 features 294 GE wind turbines each with a 1.6 MW capacity to produce enough electricity to power 140,000 average American homes.

Commenting on the project Sempra president and CEO Jeffrey Martin highlighted it to be an example of how strong state and local leadership draws investments and allows for optimal usage of natural resources.

"Our strategic partnership with BP Wind Energy has allowed Sempra US Gas & Power to accelerate its growth into renewable energy and we are on track to reaching our goal of creating 1,400 MW of renewable energy capacity," added Martin.

BP Wind Energy president and CEO John Graham remarked that the farm was a result of the pro-growth strategy adopted by Kansas.

"The state of Kansas has created a predictable, stable environment in which companies can invest and do business," said Graham.

Electricity produced at the facility will be produced by Associated Electric Cooperative, American Electric Power unit Southwestern Electric Power Company and Arkansas Electric Cooperative Corporation as per the long-term power purchase agreements signed earlier.

The facility, going forward, will be operated by a wholly-owned subsidiary of BP Wind Energy.
