Vattenfall and BASF have taken a significant step in advancing the Nordlicht offshore wind projects by awarding contracts to four suppliers for essential components and installation services.

The contracts have been awarded to EEW Special Pipe Constructions (SPC), CS WIND Offshore, DEME, and Jan De Nul.

Upon completion, the wind farms are anticipated to generate clean energy for approximately 1.7 million households.

The awarded contracts encompass the production of 112 key components, including monopiles and transition pieces, which will be manufactured by EEW SPC and CS WIND Offshore respectively.

DEME has been entrusted with the installation of these components while Jan De Nul will handle the inter-array cable installation.

The final investment decision (FID) is expected in late 2025, with construction slated to commence in 2026 and full commissioning by 2028.

Vattenfall head of offshore wind Catrin Jung said: “The award of these contracts marks an important milestone in the development of the Nordlicht cluster.

“We value our suppliers as true partners, whose exceptional expertise is essential for realising our vision of large-scale, fossil-free renewable energy in the German North Sea. The Nordlicht projects will play a crucial role in advancing the energy transition while supporting our sustainability goals. We look forward to working closely with our partners to bring these projects to fruition.”

EEW SPC will process around 141,000t of steel at its Rostock site to create the monopile foundation at Nordlicht.

CS WIND Offshore’s role in supplying transition pieces builds on their previous collaboration with Vattenfall on Denmark’s Vesterhav projects.

DEME will use its advanced vessels to ensure precise foundation placement, of the transition pieces and monopiles a critical aspect of the construction phase.

Jan De Nul is responsible for laying 196km of cables using their Connector vessel to link turbines within the wind farms efficiently.

Last year, Vattenfall and BASF contracted Vestas for its 112 V236-15.0MW wind turbines to be used in Nordlicht 1 and 2 projects.
