British utility company National Grid has received £1.7m in funding from Ofgem’s Strategic Innovation Fund to advance four projects aimed at decarbonising the country’s energy system.

This funding will advance the projects into the next phase of the regulator’s programme, designed to foster innovation and steer the UK towards a net-zero carbon footprint.

National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED) has been allocated £920,000 to enhance the decarbonisation of rural communities and the construction industry.

The Rural Energy and Community Heat project focuses on overcoming the challenges of delivering sufficient electrical capacity for low-carbon technologies in remote areas.

Concurrently, the Road to Power initiative aims to bolster the increasing use of electric power in road and construction equipment.

National Grid Electricity Transmission has secured £870,000 to delve into the potential of offshore energy islands and superconducting technologies.

These funds will aid in crafting blueprints for the necessary technologies and capabilities to pilot these innovations within the British energy system.

The awarded funds are part of the programme’s Alpha Phase, which allows for the scaling of innovation to levels that could enable future commercialisation and integration into the UK’s power networks.

This phase generally follows preliminary feasibility studies conducted during the Discovery phase.

The projects benefit from the Strategic Innovation Fund, a collaborative programme between Ofgem and Innovate UK.

NGED future capacity head Paul Morris said: “National Grid Electricity Distribution is committed to driving innovation and collaboration to accelerate the transition to a sustainable energy future.

“The funding awards from the Ofgem Strategic Innovation Fund recognise the huge potential in both of these projects, and will enable us to further develop and deploy these cutting-edge solutions that contribute to achieving net zero and improving customer experience.”
