Sif Holding has announced the successful manufacture of the first of 54 monopiles for Equinor‘s Empire Wind 1 project in the US.

The milestone was achieved on the new production line at the expanded Maasvlakte 2 facilities in Rotterdam.

The Empire Wind project is being developed 15-30 miles southeast of Long Island, New York. It comprises two phases, Empire Wind 1 and Empire Wind 2, with a total capacity of 2GW, which is enough to power more than one million homes.

Meanwhile, the manufacturing of transition pieces for Empire Wind is taking place at Sif’s Roermond facilities.

The production of monopiles and transition pieces for Empire Wind 1 is scheduled for the first quarter of 2025, with the components set to be shipped to the US for installation.

Sif Holding CEO Fred van Beers said: “It is with great pleasure that we could deliver the first of 54 monopiles for Empire Wind 1 to our client Equinor. Thanks to the efforts of everyone involved, we have achieved this important step in Sif’s history.

“We will now focus on getting the facilities up-to-speed to manufacture approximately 200 monopiles per year. It makes me proud to see that the quality of the first product is very good and that measurement is widely within tolerances.

“The new facilities enhance Sif’s position as market leader in offshore wind energy foundations and will contribute largely to the energy transition from fossil to clean energies.”

Sif took the final investment decision (FID) in February 2023 to invest €328m ($346m) in expanding its production capabilities at Maasvlakte 2.

Empire Offshore Wind played a crucial role in financing this expansion, contributing €50m in advanced factory payments and becoming a key client for the investment programme.

The expansion was completed both on time and within budget. In August 2024, Sif revealed that the first of three production lines at the expanded Maasvlakte 2 facilities was operational.
