German energy group RWE has commissioned the 54MW San Severo onshore wind farm located in Italy’s Apulia region.
The wind farm comprises 12 turbines with a capacity of 4.5MW each. Situated in the province of Foggia, this site is set to supply green electricity to approximately 55,000 households.
RWE now operates 16 onshore wind farms in Italy, including the San Severo wind farm, with a total installed capacity of approximately 527MW. This capacity is sufficient to power around 400,000 Italian homes with sustainable energy annually.
In addition to the San Severo wind farm, RWE is expanding its renewable portfolio in Italy. The company is constructing the 53MW Mondonuovo wind farm in the Apulia region and the 8.3MW Bosco solar plant near Palermo.
RWE Renewables Europe and Australia CEO Katja Wünschel said: “The commissioning of San Severo crowns a successful year with a number of new renewables projects in our core Italian market.
“With Mondonuovo, we have started the construction of another large wind farm, Bosco is our first Italian solar farm under construction and we have just taken the investment decision for Morcone and Acquafredda, our world’s first commercial advanced agri-PV plants to be built next spring.”

By GlobalDataRWE’s initiative to involve local residents in the energy transition has been realised through a community funding programme. Italian residents were given the chance to invest between €250 ($260.58) and €5,000 for a two-year term, with a guaranteed return of up to 9% gross per annum.
The total investment raised from the community for the San Severo project amounted to €200,000.
RWE’s recent success in the Italian Resilience and Recovery Plan auction has secured a contract for difference (CfD) tariff and the potential for up to a 40% return on investment for advanced Agri-PV projects.
The company has scheduled the construction of two advanced Agri-PV plants in the Campania region for early 2025. The Morcone and Acquafredda plants will have capacities of 9.8MW and 9.3MW, respectively.
