Global engineering firm Voith and Landsvirkjun have inaugurated the 95MW Budarhals hydro power plant (HPP) in Iceland.

The plant is equipped with two eco-friendly Kaplan turbines, water filled runner hubs and generators with brushless thyristor controlled exciters, supplied by Voith.

Voith was also responsible for the supply of the main parts of the electromechanical equipment, the powerhouse cranes and station control systems for the project.

Landsvirkjun Budarhals HPP project manager Gudlaugur Thorarinsson said an agreement had been signed with Landsvirkjun to supply all machinery and electrical equipment for the power plant in April 2010.

“All of Voith’s work in this project has been diligently completed despite harsh winter weathers and ambitious time schedule,” Thorarinsson added.

“Landsvirkjun is very satisfied with the performance of Voith.”

Landsvirkjun was responsible to carry out the design work for the Budarhals HPP in 1989 and later developed to the present design.

The Budarhals hydro power project received funding support from Voith Financial Services.

In February 2014, Voith won a major contract worth €200m from the Water and Power Development Authority for the supply of the complete electromechanical equipment for a hydropower plant in Pakistan.

During the same month, the company also received new orders from Vorarlberger Ill-werke to supply two pumps and a pump turbine for the two hydro power projects in Austria.
