Swedish power company Vattenfall has selected MHI Vestas Offshore Wind (MVOW) as preferred supplier for Horns Rev 3 offshore wind farm to be built off the coast of Denmark.

If a firm and unconditional deal is signed, MVOW will supply V164-8 MW turbines for the project.

The Danish-Japanese joint venture company will be supplying 50 units of the turbines to the 400MW project to be built in Blavandshuk, Denmark.

The project is expected to help the country meet its goal to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 2020.

Vattenfall owns 60% stake of the wind farm and the rest is owned by German company Stadtwerke Munchen.

The companies are working together on two wind farms in the German part of the Nordic Sea: DanTysk (in operation) and Sandbank.

The company said that it owns approximately 1800 MW projects, of which 1000 MW of projects are offshore wind farms.

Vattenfall Wind Power head Gunnar Groebler said: "We are very pleased to be able to appoint MHI Vestas Offshore Wind as preferred supplier of turbines for Horns Rev 3, and look forward working jointly on realizing our firm belief of cost reduction in the offshore wind sector."

According to the concession agreement with the Danish government, the wind farm should be operational by 1 January 2020.

According to Groebler, the company is also planning to start the geotechnical investigations on site and procurement of foundations and cables assures.
