Southern Power has started the commercial operation of the Lamesa Solar Facility located in Dawson County, Texas, US.

With the addition of the new 102-megawatt (MW) facility, the company now operates three large scale solar projects in the state.

Southern Power president and CEO Buzz Miller said: “The Lamesa Solar Facility is an important addition to our growing renewable fleet, and we look forward to operating it for the benefit of our customer.

“By providing clean, affordable, wholesale generation, we are able to deliver on our promise to help build the future of energy.”

Last year, the company acquired this facility from Renewable Energy Systems Americas (RES) which delivered full project EPC services.

Currently, RES is serving as the operations and maintenance contractor for the facility.

The facility is spread over 887 acres and comprises about 410,000 photovoltaic solar panels.

The City of Garland, Texas, is purchasing the energy and associated renewable energy credits from this facility as part of a power purchase agreement for 15 years.

Along with the new Lamesa Solar Facility, Southern Power now owns eight wind, solar and biomass facilities in Texas that can generate 1,200 MW of renewable energy.

The company has announced approximately 3,200 MW of renewable ownership across the country.

Since 2012, it has added or announced more than 6,500 MW of renewable energy projects.
