Siemens has completed installation of an offshore grid connection, SylWin1 in the German North Sea and transferred it to the network operator TenneT.

The grid connection will have a transmission capacity of 864MW and is linked to three wind power plants, namely the – Butendiek, DanTysk and Sandbank.

The offshore plants house 232 Siemens-manufactured wind turbines in total and maintain a generation capacity of 288MW each.

SylWin1 is situated almost 70km distance to the west of Sylt island in Germany and features high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) technology.

It comprises of more than 200 km subsea and underground cable link which connects the land-based station Büttel in Germany.

100 of the planned 232 turbines have already been set up at the facilities with installation for the others in progress.

The now-operational transmission link has the capacity to transfer enough energy for more than 1 million households.

The German firm hasd been awarded five North Sea grid connection projects by TenneT including SylWin1.

Two of the other four has been commissioned earlier in the year, with two more to be done by year end.

While BorWin2 (800MW) and HelWin1 (576MW) are the two operational connections, the other two which are yet to be completed comprise of HelWin2 (690MW) and BorWin3 (900MW).
