
Sempra US Gas & Power has announced construction of Mesquite Solar 2 in Arlington, Arizona. It is a 100MW expansion of its 4000-acre Mesquite Solar complex, which is expected to complete in late 2016.
When completed, the complex will produce power for about 45,000 homes. This power will be sold to Southern California Edison under a 20-year power purchase agreement.
Sempra US Gas & Power president Kevin C Sagara said: "We are pleased to support Southern California Edison’s commitment to diversify its growing renewable energy portfolio through the development of Mesquite Solar 2.
"The expansion of our landmark Mesquite Solar complex reflects the progressive vision and leadership by the state of Arizona and Maricopa County, and we look forward to delivering a new supply of clean, emission-free energy to California consumers."
The multi-phase expansion will create lot of construction jobs and employ about 600 workers. The new phase will also give economic boost to local communities.
The Mesquite Solar complex will complete in three phases and produce 400MW solar power.
By then, the company also expects to finish 94MW Copper Mountain Solar 4 project in Nevada.
At the end of 2016, the combined solar power portfolio of projects, jointly owned by Sempra US Gas & Power in Arizona and Nevada, is likely to grow to more than 1,000MW.
