offshore substation

Engineering and design consultancy Atkins has secured a contract from DONG Energy to design five offshore substations in the UK.

Under the contract, Atkins will provide detailed substation designs for Race Bank, DONG Energy’s offshore wind development project in the UK.

The company will also create substation designs for DONG Energy’s Walney and Burbo extension projects.

Located in the Greater Wash area off the east coast of England, the 580MW Race Bank project is expected to commence construction from 2017.

DONG Energy Wind PowerUK country managerBenj Sykes said that Atkins is working with the company to provide a design for five substations that can be applied to three of its projects.

"This will enable a production line approach to fabrication, rather than a bespoke solution each time and will reduce costs without compromising safety and reliability."
