Spanish renewable energy projects developer Acciona Energia has started operations at the 78MW Bannur wind farm in Bijapur district in the South Indian state of Karnataka.
The wind farm consists of 26 AW125/3000 Nordex-Acciona turbines, each with a rotor diameter of 125m, mounted on 120m high concrete towers.
It is expected to generate about 242GWh of clean energy every year, which is equivalent to the power consumption of about 224,000 Indian homes.
The company noted that the wind farm can help in offsetting about 232,000 metric tons of CO2 from entering the atmosphere.
Upon signing of a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA), the electricity generated from the wind farm will be supplied to Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM).
The project is claimed to be the first directly developed and built by the company in the Indian market.

The concrete towers used for the wind farm were built nearby at a purpose-built facility, while the turbine nacelles were mostly assembled at a plant in the Indian city of Chennai established by the company.
Currently, Acciona owns and operates three other wind farms in India, including Anabaru (16.5MW), Arasinagundi (13.3MW) and Tuppadahalli (56.1MW).
With the installation and start of the fourth wind farm, the company's wind power portfolio in the country has grown to 163.8MW.
