GE Renewable Energy is set to develop the new wind turbine, Haliade-X, for the offshore wind sector.
The company plans to invest more than $400m over the next three to five years to develop and deploy Haliade-X, which will be designed to produce 45% more energy than the existing offshore turbines.
Haliade-X will comprise a 12MW direct drive generator and 63% gross capacity factor.
The 260m tall turbine will also feature 107-metre-long blades and is estimated to generate 67GWh of power annually, which is sufficient enough to power up to 16,000 households and up to one million European households in a 750MW wind farm configuration.
First nacelle of Haliade-X is expected to be supplied for demonstration next year, while the first units of the turbine are expected to be shipped by 2021.
GE Renewable Energy president and CEOJérôme Pécresse said: “The renewables industry took more than 20 years to install the first 17GW of offshore wind.

By GlobalData“Today, the industry forecasts that it will install more than 90GW over the next 12 years. This is being driven by lower cost of electricity from scale and technology.
“The Haliade-X shows GE’s commitment to the offshore wind segment and will set a new benchmark for cost of electricity, thus driving more offshore growth.”
For the development of Haliade-X, GE Renewable Energy will take support of its onshore wind division, the blade expertise of LM Wind Power, as well as its power and aviation units, and other GE divisions.
