Sustainable energy storage solutions provider Energy Vault has entered an agreement with the State Electricity Commission (SEC) of Victoria to deliver a 100MW/200MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) at the SEC Renewable Energy Park in Horsham, Australia.

The SEC Renewable Energy Park – Horsham is claimed as one of Australia’s first fully publicly owned utility-scale renewable energy initiatives.

The hybrid solar and BESS facility features more than 212,000 solar panels with a combined capacity of 119MW, capable of producing 242,000MWh of solar energy each year.

The addition of Energy Vault’s BESS will ensure the provision of stable, dispatchable power during peak demand with a two-hour storage capability.

Amounting to $370m, the SEC’s investment is projected to supply renewable energy for around 51,000 households.

It will also create approximately 246 jobs during the construction phase and foster economic growth within the Horsham area.

Preconstruction activities have already commenced this week, with the project expected to reach full operational status by late 2027.

Energy Vault chairman and CEO Robert Piconi said: “We are pleased to further expand our footprint of energy storage systems in the dynamic and rapidly growing Australian market and work with SEC on this innovative hybrid project architecture.

“As our first government collaboration, this publicly owned project is well-aligned with our mission to accelerate the clean energy transition through sustainable and efficient energy storage solutions and will play a pivotal role in ensuring the availability of renewable energy.”

Energy Vault’s BESS will be constructed using their proprietary X-VAULT integration platform and UL9540-certified B-VAULT product, managed by the VaultOS Energy Management System.

This innovative system architecture allows for flexibility in choosing battery and inverter suppliers and can accommodate both AC-coupled and DC-coupled configurations to suit various project requirements.

This latest development in the Australian market follows several recent agreements signed by the company for BESS deployments with other companies such as Enervest and ACEN Australia.

Energy Vault’s B-VAULT portfolio currently includes over 2GWh of projects either already deployed or under development.

In November 2024, Energy Vault disclosed plans for the 57MW/114MWh Cross Trails BESS in Scurry County, Texas, US.
