Construction has started on the Sunfish Solar 2 project, co-developed by Consumers Energy and Hecate Energy, marking a milestone in the renewable energy landscape in Michigan, US.
The 360MW solar energy development in Lee Township, Calhoun County, aims to power approximately 69,000 homes upon its anticipated completion in the second quarter (Q2) of 2026.
Lee Township supervisor Brad Shrontz said: “Lee Township is proud to be part of the renewable energy movement through Sunfish Solar 2.
“This project allows us to embrace the future of energy while creating tangible benefits for our residents, from new employment opportunities to economic development and beyond.”
The project will help Michigan reach its goal of sourcing 50% of its energy from renewables by 2030.
The Sunfish Solar 2 project will feature 620,000 bifacial solar panels spread across 1,300 acres. It will play a pivotal role in Consumers Energy’s commitment to integrate 8,000MW of solar power by 2040.

By GlobalDataEngineering company Bechtel was selected as the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor for the project in September 2024. It will focus on hiring from West-Central Michigan and contribute to local workforce development. The company has started the initial site works.
This development follows the commencement of the construction of Muskegon Solar Energy Center last year.
