The Taylor Wind clean energy project, a collaborative venture between Saulteau First Nations and EDF Renewables, has secured an electricity-purchase agreement with Canadian energy supplier BC Hydro.

This marks an effort towards providing sustainable power to British Columbia (BC)’s growing residential and business sectors.

The Taylor Wind project, situated in the Peace River region of British Columbia, will feature 40 wind turbines and associated infrastructure, including a substation and a high-voltage transmission line.

The project will produce 200MW of electricity, sufficient to supply 60,000 homes with renewable energy.

With Saulteau First Nations holding a majority 51% economic interest, Taylor Wind emphasises the importance of Indigenous partnerships in renewable energy development.

The initiative represents an investment of $600m with a portion earmarked for the local economy, particularly through development and construction activities.

The Taylor Wind project is expected to begin operations in 2031.

The project will create 150 jobs across its development, construction and operational phases.

It has been selected as one of ten clean-energy projects by BC Hydro in its 2024 call for power. The ten projects chosen to move forward from the call will feature 50% First Nations equity ownership, totalling up to $3bn in assets owned.

The ten projects will collectively generate 5,000 gigawatt hours of electricity each year, enough to power 500,000 new homes, and will boost BC Hydro’s supply by 8%.

Minister of Energy and Climate Solutions Adrian Dix stated: “The Taylor Wind project will generate clean energy that we urgently need, while providing jobs and long-term benefits to the Saulteau First Nations and the Peace River region.”

“The completion of an electricity purchase agreement for the project between the Saulteau First Nations, EDF Renewables and BC Hydro stands as a testament to what we can do together when we build partnerships to increase First Nations’ participation in the clean energy sector and advance economic reconciliation.”

Saulteau First Nations chief Rudy Paquette stated: “Our investment in Taylor Wind will create jobs and economic development, while also respecting our treaty and making wise use of our natural resources.

“Together, we are proving that reconciliation means creating triple-win solutions that benefit everyone. This is the future and the future is bright.”
