Apex Clean Energy has announced the start of commercial operations at Great Kiskadee Storage, a 100MW/200MWh utility-scale battery facility in Hidalgo County, Texas, US.

This project, featuring Powin’s Centipede Platform and StackOS battery management system, marks the first operational asset of SA Grid Solutions, a joint venture (JV) established last year between Apex Clean Energy, SK Gas and SK eternix.

Apex Clean Energy will oversee the development, construction, operations, and optimisation of current and future facilities under the JV.

The next project, similar in size and duration, is already slated for purchase by the JV.

Great Kiskadee Storage is part of a broader initiative by Apex Clean Energy and Powin, which includes the co-located 195MW Angelo Solar Project.

The two projects were announced in May 2023 and are anticipated to generate more than $24.4m in tax revenue.

The battery facility is designed to absorb excess solar or wind generation during low demand and discharge during peak usage, thus enhancing grid efficiency and flexibility.

Apex Clean Energy CEO Ken Young said: “Great Kiskadee Storage marks a significant milestone in our partnership with SK Gas and SK eternix, demonstrating the strength of our collaboration and shared commitment to advancing energy storage solutions.

“This facility will play a crucial role in enhancing grid reliability in Texas, absorbing excess electricity during periods of high generation and providing power back to the grid when demand increases.”

Saber Power Services constructed the Great Kiskadee facility, which is expected to stabilise the Texas grid and contribute more than $12.6m in tax revenue over its lifetime.

In addition to its economic impact, Great Kiskadee Storage has committed grant funding to restore 200 acres of wetland within the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge.

This restoration effort aims to enhance habitats for migratory waterfowl, bats, and other species, reflecting the project’s commitment to environmental stewardship.
