Nordic solar power developer and independent power producer (IPP) Alight is expanding into Denmark with the acquisition of the 215MWp Lidsø solar park from European Energy.

Located in Rødby Havn, Lolland Municipality, the project will be among Denmark’s “largest solar parks”, upon completion.

Skandinaviska Enskilda Banker (SEB) has facilitated this deal by providing Alight with €127m ($138.4m) in debt financing.

The construction of the project began last year, with commissioning expected by mid-2025.

In a statement, Alight said that two blue-chip companies have agreed to purchase the electricity generated by the park.

“This acquisition further solidifies Alight’s position as a Nordic leader in solar energy,” the company added.

Founded in 2013, Alight expanded into Finland in 2023 and currently has more than 900MWp of solar power in development.

Alight CEO Warren Campbell said: “Denmark represents an exciting opportunity for Alight. Our acquisition of the Lidsø solar park, which European Energy has done a fantastic job developing, will help meet the country’s rising electricity demand and marks just the beginning of our plans to contribute to Denmark’s energy transition. Additional strategic acquisitions and partnerships will play a key role in our expansion.”

Alight added that it aims to strengthen its presence in Denmark and the broader Nordic region by pursuing strategic acquisitions and forming new partnerships.

The acquisition of the Lidsø solar park comes after Alight’s recent acquisition of its first solar park in Ramsjöholm, Sweden.

European Energy CEO Knud Erik Andersen added: “We are pleased to see Alight acquiring the Lidsø solar park, a project we have carefully developed and secured with long-term power purchase agreements.

“This transaction underscores European Energy’s ability to bring high-quality renewable energy assets to market. We are confident that Alight will be a responsible and capable owner, ensuring the park continues to contribute to Denmark’s clean energy transition.”
