Household electrification could save up to $750 (€615) a year for almost 12 million US households between now and 2030, states a report by Rewiring America, a not-for-profit organisation.
The report provides a blueprint for a pilot project through which 60 US communities would be encouraged to electrify their homes and vehicles, facilitating the creation of 700,000 jobs and decreasing greenhouse gas emissions by nearly 40 million tonnes a year.
Designed to be financed by President Joe Biden’s $100bn National Clean Energy and Sustainability Accelerator, approximately 90% of all project funds would directly benefit low and middle-income households, states the report.
Households in participating communities would receive direct financial support to go electric via the Accelerator and a network of green banks, while communities at large would receive support to organise local supply chains and distribution channels, implement any necessary regulations, and facilitate the recruitment, training and placement of local workers.
Each of the 60 communities, chosen for their potential for significant household savings, are expected to develop an electrification road map and funding request for the pilot programme and beyond.
