The top five companies accounted for 9% of patenting activity
Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that State Grid Corporation of China filed the most renewable energy patents within the power industry in Q1 2024. The company filed 295 renewable energy-related patents in the quarter, compared with 555 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Contemporary Amperex Technology with 165 renewable energy patent filings, Siemens Energy (148 filings), and China Southern Power Grid (143 filings) in Q1 2024.
Patenting activity was driven by China with a 53% share of total patent filings
The largest share of renewable energy related patent filings in the power industry in Q1 2024 was in China with 53%, followed by the US (13%) and Japan (5%). The share represented by China was 79% lower than the 131% share it accounted for in Q4 2023.
