Eni-controlled company Plenitude has completed the construction of a 200MW Guajillo battery energy storage system (BESS) project in Texas, through its subsidiary Eni New Energy US.

Using lithium-ion lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, the site is designed to “efficiently” store electricity and support the local power grid, particularly as the region experiences a “very strong” growth in electricity generation from renewable sources.

The plant’s strategic location next to Plenitude’s 266MWdc/200MWac Corazon solar farm on an 800ha site aims to maximise operational efficiency and strengthen its regional presence. The plant is expected to be commercially operational by mid-2025.

Eni New Energy US managing director Patrick Monino said: “Large lithium-ion batteries are a rapidly expanding technology, enabling an increasing penetration of renewable energies in electrical systems. Guajillo’s completion positions Plenitude at the forefront also in this sector and consolidates our presence in the US renewable energy market, where we have reached 1.5GW of installed capacity.”

In November 2024, Energy Infrastructure Partners (EIP) signed an agreement to increase its stake in Plenitude.

Plenitude operates globally across more than 15 countries, with a business model that encompasses electricity production from renewable sources, energy sales, and energy solutions to ten million European customers.
