SSE‘s 101MW Yellow River onshore wind farm in Rhode, County Offaly, Ireland, has commenced power production, following the successful connection and energisation to Ireland’s national grid by EirGrid.
With the initial power achieved, the wind farm will undergo turbine testing over the next few months.
The project is on track to reach full power and commence commercial operations by early 2025.
Once operational, the Yellow River wind farm will contribute to Ireland’s renewable energy targets for 2030, providing secure, clean power for Irish consumers.
It is expected to power approximately 67,000 homes annually and displace around 66,000tpa of carbon emissions.
Engineering and technical teams from SSE Renewables, EirGrid, Suir Engineering, and Farrans Construction have worked in unison to connect the project’s 29 Nordex N117/3600 wind turbines and the associated Knockdrin 110kV substation to the nearby Derryiron 110kV transmission station.

By GlobalDataSSE Renewables began construction of the Yellow River project in October 2022, with turbine deliveries and installation starting in December 2023.
During peak construction, the project created up to 150 full-time jobs. As the wind farm nears completion, it will continue to support job creation and the local economy in County Offaly.
The wind farm will also generate positive local community impacts through an annual Community Benefit Fund, which will support local initiatives and amenities throughout the 16.5-year duration of its Renewable Energy Support Scheme (RESS) contract with the Irish Government.
The completion of the Yellow River wind farm will play a role in SSE Renewables’ goal to expand its renewable energy capacity to up to 9GW by 2027.
This is part of SSE’s Net Zero Acceleration Programme Plus (NZAP Plus), which aims to advance the transition to a more sustainable and domestically secure energy system.
