The US is expected to be at the forefront of global ammonia capacity additions by  2030. The country alone accounts for over 37% of the global upcoming ammonia capacity additions. Russia and India are anticipated to follow next in terms of upcoming ammonia capacity additions by 2030.

The US has a large agricultural sector that relies heavily on ammonia-based fertilisers to enhance crop yields. So while agriculture stands as the primary dominant driver behind the capacity additions, the other factor contributing to the capacity growth in the country is the abundance of low-cost natural gas, which is a primary feedstock for ammonia production. Ammonia is also being explored as a renewable energy source and as a potential hydrogen carrier in the US.

In the US, the major capacity addition is from an announced project, ‘Ascension Clean Energy Donaldsonville Ammonia Plant’, with a capacity of 7.20 million tonnes per annum (mtpa). It is expected to commence production of ammonia in 2027. ‘St. Charles Clean Fuels St. James Parish Ammonia Plant’ is another important project, which is expected to come online in 2028 with an annual production capacity of 3mtpa.

By 2030, the total ammonia capacity of under-construction and preconstruction projects in the US is expected to be around 29.02mtpa. Russia and India are expected to add a capacity of 7.04mtpa and 5.86mtpa by 2030, respectively.
