GE Vernova has announced the opening of its new high-voltage direct current (HVDC) Competence Center in Berlin, Germany.
The facility is expected to enhance grid stability and integration of renewable energy across Germany and Europe.
HVDC systems are crucial for achieving electrification and decarbonisation objectives, and the new centre will focus on developing and testing technology for efficient power transmission over long distances, including offshore submarine links.
The HVDC Competence Center is a significant addition to GE Vernova’s Electrification Systems businesses in Europe.
It will bolster the company’s capacity to support regional and global growth in grid solutions, power conversion, and solar and storage.
This expansion is part of GE Vernova’s commitment to driving Germany’s net zero efforts and aligns with the country’s ambition to upgrade grid infrastructure and invest in the system stability roadmap.

By GlobalDataGE Vernova’s launch of the HVDC centre comes at a time when Europe is intensifying efforts to decarbonise and meet the increasing demand for electricity.
The company has recently entered an innovation agreement with four German transmission system operators (TSOs) to develop a Multi-Terminal/Multi-Hub HVDC connection solution.
This marks a significant step in constructing a future-proof high-voltage grid for Germany and Europe’s energy transition.
Additionally, GE Vernova is collaborating with TenneT on a 2GW HVDC offshore transmission system programme in Germany and the Netherlands, under a five-year Framework Cooperation Agreement signed in March 2023.
The new HVDC Competence Center will support these initiatives and other projects aimed at integrating renewable energy into the grid, highlighting GE Vernova’s dedication to innovative solutions for the region’s evolving grid needs.
In line with its growth strategy in Germany, GE Vernova anticipates the creation of approximately 500 new highly skilled jobs in Berlin by the end of next year.
These positions will range from engineers and project managers to support staff, further establishing the Berlin facility as a key hub for the company’s electrification efforts.
GE Vernova Electrification Systems CEO Philippe Piron said: “The world’s future is electric, and electrification is essential for achieving a net-zero emissions future.
“The expansion of our Berlin centre is a significant step towards advancing reliable, affordable, and decarbonised energy and supporting the rapid growth of GE Vernova’s Electrification segment.
“As a key electrification hub for GE Vernova in Europe, the Berlin site will drive innovation in grid solutions, power conversion, and renewable energy integration.”
