Canada-based technology solutions provider Anaergia has started construction of renewable energy facility in Yabu, Japan.

The new facility will use Anaergia’s advanced solid waste processing and wastewater treatment equipment to convert farm waste and food waste into renewable energy.

Toyo Energy Solution, a subsidiary of real estate development organisation Toyo Group, has invested in the facility, and will execute the construction and operations of the plant.

Toyo Group president director Yoshimitsu Okada said: “Toyo Group is partnering with Anaergia to develop this biogas plant in Japan, and other potential opportunities in the Far East region, to utilise Anaergia’s leading technology to contribute to waste diversion and CO2 reduction.”

Anaergia’s equipment includes manure feeding system and its BIOREX system that extracts organics from unsorted waste, resource recovery and treatment equipment.

The organic feedstock, which is recovered from the waste sources, is transformed into renewable energy via anaerobic digestion that in turn produces biogas, which is converted into nearly 1.4MW of electricity per year.

Generation membranes from Anaergia’s Fibracast subsidiary, treats the waste water produced by the facility.

In-addition, a greenhouse will be built adjacent to the facility, to utilise the waste heat recovered from the biogas plant.

Anaergia CEO Andrew Benedek said: “This new facility underscores Anaergia’s commitment to the Japanese market, and it is the direct result of Anaergia’s exemplary partnership with Toyo Energy Solution.

“The utilisation of advanced technologies in this facility will serve as a model for others looking for innovative and flexible waste management and renewable energy solutions that make economic sense and also have a positive impact on the environment.”
