US-based Solar energy plants developer SunEdison and MIC Solar Energy Holdings have completed a 16.4MW solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant for Davis-Monathan Air Force Base (AFB) in Tucson, Arizona.

Claimed to be the largest solar power plant at any US Department of Defense installation, the new plant would help Davis-Monathan AFB save $500,000 annually for the next 25 years.

The ownership of the newly built solar power plant, located on 170 acres of underutilised land, has been taken by MIC Solar that specialises in infrastructure investments.

As per the contract signed between SunEdison and MIC Solar, the power plant operations will be managed by SunEdison Renewable Operation Center that provides asset management, monitoring and reporting services.

Equipped with SunEdison Silvantis solar PV modules, the new plant has been designed and developed to provide 35% of Davis-Monathan AFB’s electricity requirements.

The Davis-Monthan AFB solar power plant is expected to produce enough electricity annually to power 5,173 US houses.

SunEdison North America president Bob Powell said Davis-Monathan AFB has high electricity demands and often have large plots of underutilised land.

“We can help them use that land to generate significant cost savings that can be reinvested into our country,” Powell added.
