Siemens Energy has been awarded a contract to supply 48 wind turbines for the 144MW Westermeerwind project in the Netherlands.
Under the 15-year comprehensive maintenance contract, Siemens will supply 48 Siemens SWT-3.0-108 wind turbines, each with 3MW capacity, for the largest near-shore wind farm in the Netherlands.
Siemens will also operate the €400m wind farm, which will be constructed in the IJsselmeer waters along the Noordoostpolder dikes, for a minimum term of fifteen years.
The wind project can produce over 500 GWh of sustainable electricity enough to supply 160,000 households, while significantly contributing to the Netherlands’ aim to reach climate-protection targets of generating 145 of its electricity from renewable energy sources by 2020.
Siemens Nederland management board member Bernard Fortuyn said: "During construction, the Westermeerwind project will create some 150 additional jobs in the region and in the fifteen years following, employment for approximately 30 technical engineers and other skilled staff will be ensured."
Scheduled to commence work in summer 2014, the wind farm will be commissioned between end of 2015 and early 2016.
