Italian oilfield services company Saipem has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Geolog and Ignis H2 Energy to launch a new venture focused on enhancing geothermal energy capabilities.
The initiative aligns with Saipem’s research and development programme, which focuses on technological innovations for the energy transition.
This collaboration aims to advance technological solutions and conduct feasibility studies for new geothermal plants, seeking to harness clean and renewable energy both in Italy and globally.
The partnership seeks to unlock the potential of geothermal resources by developing methodologies that could significantly expand its utilisation.
Under the terms of the MOU, the companies will jointly explore unconventional geothermal resources, including terrestrial heat sources that are currently underutilised.
Saipem will spearhead the feasibility studies for geothermal plants, evaluating existing market solutions and identifying areas where technological advancements are needed.

Last month, Saipem and British nuclear company Newcleo announced a collaboration to explore how nuclear energy can enhance the environmental sustainability of offshore drilling operations.
As part of the agreement, a feasibility study will be conducted to explore the development of floating nuclear prototypes. The goal is to connect these floating units to the onshore electricity grid or to other consumers.
Newcleo noted that the SM-LFR technology stands out among small nuclear fission reactors, utilising passive safety systems that rely on natural marine forces. This approach offers enhanced efficiency compared with traditional fission reactor types.
